  1. SAMcorder cannot be initialized
  2. SAMitor shows 'libvlc.dll not found'
  3. SAMitor shows no video, plays no audio or even crashes
  4. How can I receive DVB-H services?
  5. SAMcorder crashes after it started to receive a transport stream

After starting the SAMcorder following error message is shown : "SAMcorder cannot be initialized"
  If SAMcorder cannot initialize then most likely no RF tuner card had ever been installed on that PC. If so then the reason for the problem are the missing BDA drivers of Microsoft's DirectX 9. To solve the problem, search for a file named "BDA.cab" on your harddisk. If you find the BDA.cab archive on your harddisk then extract it to the windows\system32 directory. Part of the archive are two .inf files named BDA.inf and BDASETUP.inf. Click with the _right_ mouse button on these files - a context menu opens. Part of that menu is an entry "Install" - click on that entry. After finishing the procedure SAMcorder should initialize correctly, so you can use it.

If you don't find BDA.cab on your harddisk then download and install the DirectX 9 _SDK_ from Microsoft's homepage. This installation also copies BDA.cab onto your harddisk. Afterwards proceed as described above.
Actual reason for the problem is that on WinXP Microsoft doesn't install the BDA drivers any more by default (in Win2K they still were installed by default) - so commonly the DVB-T tuner device manufacturers install them while installing their software...

In case the procedure described above was not successfully, you can try to install the Satelco patch.

With starting SAMitor an error message 'libvlc.dll not found' appears.
  The problem occurs if VLC 0.8.5 or later has been installed on your system. SAMitor itself aleady contains VLC 0.8.4a plug-in, which is used by SAMitor, if no other VLC is installed on the system. So normally there is no need to install a separate VLC.

To fix the problem look into the VLC installation directory for the libvlc.dll and copy it additionally to the windows\system32 directory.

SAMitor shows no video, plays no audio or even crashes
  First of all - this is most likely not a bug of SAMitor, but a problem of the used media library like VLC.

For playing the video/audio services the media library (VLC, Quicktime, ...) requires a properly defined .SDP file, that contains important information regarding the particular video/audio service. Such an SDP file looks similar to this:
v=0
o=FhG-HHI 3389865175 3389865175 IN IP4 127.0.0.1
s=/live.mp4
u=http:///
e=admin@
c=IN IP4 239.10.1.1
a=control:*
a=range:npt=0-3000000
t=0 0
m=video 31190 RTP/AVP 96
a=rtpmap:96 H264/90000
a=control:trackID=1
a=mpeg4-esid:201
a=mid:1
a=fmtp:96 profile-level-id=42c00d; packetization-mode=0; sprop-parameter-sets=Z0LADdkBQfE=,aNuOIA==;
m=audio 31192 RTP/AVP 97
a=rtpmap:97 mpeg4-generic/44100/2
a=control:trackID=2
a=mpeg4-esid:101
a=mid:2
a=fmtp:97 streamtype=5; profile-level-id=15; mode=AAC-hbr; config=1390; SizeLength=13; IndexLength=3; IndexDeltaLength=3; Profile=1;

If no .SDP file is set up or parameters do not match the actual video/audio service then the media library doesn't play anything or even crashes. This can easily be verified:

So the solution to the problem is providing a correct .SDP file to SAMitor.

SDP files are essential to a DVB-H video/audio service and thus carried within the Electronic Service Guide (ESG) within the transport stream. Using SAMesg dvbSAM is able to extract the SDP's automatically from the transport stream. To do it, follow these steps:

  • in SAMcorder, select the input interface (tuner, file, IP network or ASI device) and start receiving the TS
  • click in "Navigation" button
  • in SAMcorder Navigation window, look for an entry "ESG bootstrap"
  • double click "ESG bootstrap" - SAMesg opens the ESG bootstrap
  • after some seconds a window "ESG bootstrap analyzer" opens
  • check one of the checkboxes to select the ESG you want to use (maybe there is only one, then check this one)
  • after some seconds the Program List in SAMcorder Navigation window gets updated with the true Program Names (info for this is taken from the ESG by SAMesg and signalled to SAMcorder)
  • while updating the program names in SAMcorder also the .SDPs belonging to the DVB-H services have been extracted from the ESG and automatically configured in SAMcorder.
  • NOW double click the video/audio services in Navigation Window - SAMitor opens and shows the video
  • click on the speaker button below the video to listen also to the audio

Alternatively have a look onto our live demonstration.

If you don't use SAMesg then you need to obtain the correct SDP files from another source (e.g. directly from the video encoder who is actually creating the .SDP file) and to configure it manually within SAMcorder's streamer settings.

Afterwards re-connect the streamer and open the monitor again via the SAMcorder streamer monitor button.

How can I receive DVB-H services?
  Using SAMcorder application of dvbSAM in combination with a Direct Show BDA compliant DVB-T tuner card you can receive live DVB-T and DVB-H channels available free on air.

Please have a look on the tutorial 'How can I receive DVB-H services'.

SAMcorder crashes after it started to receive a transport stream
  This problem can be caused by a bug in Microsoft's Broadcast Driver Architecture (DirectX/BDA), which is described detailed in Microsofts Knowledge Base in article KB896626.
In the Knowledge Base article in the section "RESOLUTION" a link to a patch is provided, which can be downloaded from Microsoft's website. In order to check whether the described BDA problem causes the SAMcorder crashes, do following:

  1. In the error message window click on "click here"
    error_message
  2. In the opened error signature window check whether the faulty module name is "PSISDECD.DLL"
    error_message
If the faulty module name is "PSISDECD.DLL" then the patch provided by Microsoft in the Knowledge Base article KB896626 needs to be downloaded from Microsofts website and installed.

Note: Microsoft does not provide this patch via the automatic update feature of the operating system, so it needs to be downloaded and installed manually.
