SAMesg -Analyzing and Monitoring the DVB-H Electronic Service Guide

SAMesg analyses the Electronic Service Guide (ESG) of DVB-H multiplexes in all details.

It supports all relevant standards:
  • IPDC / CBMS - incl. raw, gzip and BiM encoding
  • OMA BCAST - incl. raw and gzip encoding (BiM encoding is not permitted in BCAST)

SAMesg is interworking with following dvbSAM components:
SAMesg processes ESG data either coming directly from an ESG server (e.g. via UDP multicast) or coming de-multiplexed directly out of a DVB-H multiplex. In dvbSAM, SAMcorder performs de-multiplexing and feeding SAMesg with the relevant data extracted from the particular multiplex.
SAMesg provides comprehensive features for in-depth analysis of the Electronic Service Guide (ESG) within DVB-H multiplexes. Furthermore it extracts the content of the ESGs (XMLs, SDPs, images, schedules...) for further processing in other applications.

ESG Bootstrap Detection - example using de-multiplexing by SAMcorder
SAMcorder's Navigation feature can be used to detect the ESG bootstrap in the current multiplex. By double clicking the ESG bootstrap entry in the navigation window, an IP streamer gets created automatically and SAMesg gets started, listening on the identified bootstrap port.

Now SAMesg receives and analyzes all ESG data belonging to the ESG bootstrap:

  • each bootstrap file can be analyzed in all details
  • multiple access descriptors and provider discoveries are supported
  • the access descriptor files can be decoded up to the last bit
  • all announced ESG's get listed in a treeview
  • the type of ESG, IPDC/CBMS or OMA BCAST, gets detected automatically
  • bootstrap updates will be recognized automatically and processed

ESG Container Analysis and Monitoring
After selecting one (or several) ESG's in the Bootstrap Analyzer window, the selected ESG containers get received and analyzed:

  • reception and analysis of all container files
  • single and multiple transport mechanism is supported
  • each container file can be analyzed in all details
  • the container files can be decoded up to the last bit
  • extraction of all XML fragments, SDP's and Images
  • all content, XML fragments, SDP's and Images get listed in a treeview
  • container updates will be recognized automatically and processed
  • the time of last update gets displayed
  • updates are counted
  • the time and average time of ESG completion gets calculated and displayed
  • the state of each ESG as well as all measured parameters can be monitored via SNMP (using SAMager Agent)

ESG Complete
Upon successful completion of the ESG processing the ESG program information gets rendered:

  • additional content information gets displayed via double click on a program entry
  • ESG information like program names get transmitted to SAMcorder to update the program lists
  • SDP files extracted from the ESG get transmitted to SAMcorder/SAMitor for further processing
