SAMager - SNMP based DVB-H and DVB-T Monitoring

SAMager Console is an SNMP client for the operator or system engineer which performs configuration and status visualization for all SAM-MT 400 DVB-H/DVB-T monitoring probes of an entire monitoring network via SNMP. SAMager Console is communicating with SAMager Agent, the SNMP master agent, running on the SAM-MT 400.

It can be used in addition to an existing network management system or instead of such an NMS.

It allows very comfortable access to the particular SNMP MIB operations, thereby making configuration tasks via SNMP very simple and intuitive.

Additionally it displays
  • the global monitoring status or the entire network,
  • the monitoring status of particular probes within the network and
  • the monitoring status of every particular parameter being monitored within a probe
at one glance in both a status window reflecting each probe in the network as well as live in a geographic map window (Google Earth).

SAMager Console provides a comfortable access to all SAM-MT 400 monitoring probes within the monitoring network via SNMP. It includes many useful features to assist the operator by its daily tasks.

Key Attributes:
  • supports SNMP based monitoring of DVB-T and DVB-H multiplexes on all technical layers - see the Feature Matrix
  • SNMP MIB includes almost 800(!) SNMP operations and TRAPs
  • supports operation with any number of remote probes
  • live status visualization of all probes in the network within an aggregated status window as well as in a geographical map (Google Earth)
  • monitoring down to sub-feature level
  • comfortable graphical user interface
  • assisted and comfortable MIB access
  • probe grouping in clusters and regions
  • SNMP access is possible to particular probes, to entire clusters, entire regions and the entire monitoring network, making re-configuration of a large number of probes quick and easy, thereby reducing OA&M costs
  • can be used to query the current status and current value of every particular monitored parameter on every remote probe
  • supports individual SNMP scripts (GUI assisted), e.g. for automating SNMP configuration tasks or for building aggregated monitoring states from arbitrary monitoring parameters
  • receives/displays SNMP TRAPs and can also be configured to regularly poll the monitoring states of every probe periodically

System Configuration

SAMager Console monitoring example
SAMager Console monitoring

As illustrated in the figure above, the SAMager Console application receives the monitoring results via SNMP from all remote monitoring probes (SAM-MT 400) and provides an aggregated view on each probe. So the current status of the multiplex at every monitoring location gets displayed at one glance.

Since the SAMager Agent supports simultaneous communication with several SNMP clients, the current status of every probe can be reported to several destinations at the same time. So monitoring the network can take place simultaneously at different locations.

Control Window

SAMager Console - Control Window

The SAMager Console control window lists all regions (here "Saxony"), clusters (here "Loebau" and "Bautzen") and the particular probes.
  • manages regions, clusters and particular probes within a comfortable treeview
  • shows the overall monitoring condition of every probe, cluster, region and the entire monitoring network at one glance
  • controls to which probes, clusters or regions SNMP communication takes place
  • provides access to the MIB
  • controls live visualization of the monitoring stats in a geographic map (Google Earth)
  • display of various probe specific information such as current TRAP counters, responsible technician for the particular probe...
  • permanent heartbeat supervision of all remote probes in order to detect outages immediately

Cluster Monitoring

SAMager Console - Cluster Monitoring Window

The SAMager Console cluster monitoring window provides various information at one glance (here for 4 probes):
  • aggregated view of all monitored parameters of all probes within the cluster
  • pre-defined status LEDs for all major monitoring parameter groups
  • five freely configurable status LEDs for displaying up to 5 aggregated stats of a collection of arbitrary monitoring parameters each in order to monitor customer specific key parameters at one glance
  • configuration of scripts for status LEDs can be adjusted GUI-assisted
  • display of various probe specific information such as current TRAP counters, system up-time, location ...
  • permanent heartbeat supervision of all remote probes in order to detect outages immediately (e.g. caused by a broken internet connection)

Of course, all cluster monitoring windows of the entire monitoring network can be displayed simultaneously.

SNMP MIB

SAMager Console - SNMP MIB GUI

The SAMager Console SNMP MIB GUI provides various features:
  • access to every MIB operation via comfortable treeview
  • access to any probe within the monitoring network, also cluster-wise, region-wise and network-wise
  • supports the entire, comprehensive decontis SNMP MIB consisting of approx. 800 SNMP operations and traps for DVB-H and DVB-T monitoring
  • assists in setting parameters by already proposing the correct data format, OID indexes etc.
  • supports SNMPv2 GET, GET NEXT, GET BULK, and SET
  • supports automatic WALK through all subnodes of a selected node, thereby getting the complete status of every monitoring parameter below the selected node, which makes a query of the status of a group of monitored parameters possible by just a mouse click
  • supports definition of SNMP GET and SET collections. So repeatedly performed SNMP operations can be put GUI assisted into application scripts which can then be executed by a single mouse click or even periodically in configurable time frames

SNMP MIB Response

SAMager Console - SNMP MIB Response

The SNMP MIB Response lists all sent and received SNMP communication:
  • assigns an unambiguous ID to every SNMP request/response, so responses can always assigned to the corresponding requests also if communication with several probes takes place simultaneously
  • supports also display of response tables
  • double clicking an entry in the response window jumps to the appropriate OID in the MIB treeview, adding even appropriate OID indexes for easy access to the particular monitoring parameter
  • highlights error entries
  • shows values and value interpretations

Status Visualization

SAMager Console - geographical status visualization

The geographical status visualization shows all monitoring probes live with their current monitoring conditions at the configured geographical coordinates. The window zoomes automatically so that all probes are always in view. Upon click onto a bullet the aggregated monitoring conditions of the selected probe get displayed.
